This year’s edition of the Korean Film Festival in Australia marks our 10th year as the most celebrated event in Australia dedicated to Korean cinema. I believe that it is a remarkable milestone and achievement which was made possible through the love and support of our patrons, who we believe, are lovers of the moving image extending their cultural boundaries to connect with ideas and content from diverse backgrounds.

Our 10th year will present 22 of the best Korean films expanding a diverse array of genres which I am certain will delight any fan of film. Korean cinema continues to become recognised around the world and what better testament than for ‘Parasite’, the latest film from auteur Bong Joon-ho to have won the Palme d ‘Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and Best Film at the Sydney Film Festival.

The commemorations do not end there, 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Korean cinema. In 1919, there were a total of 6 films that were made in Korea. Now 100 years on from this date we are expecting exactly 100 times that statistic with 2018 seeing to a domestic release of 660 films.

We will be presenting several tie-in events with the film festival including a forum at the Museum of Contemporary Art delving into the topic: ‘Past, Present and Future of Korean cinema’ and a Bong Joon-ho retrospective which will be a collaboration with Sydney Film Festival.

Aligning our goal with previous years we wish to present a cinematic experience for people of all tastes, ages and cultural backgrounds.

On behalf of the team I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors, our supporters and contributors who have allowed us to reach 10 years in Australia.

Here’s to another 10 years down under!
